Two Worlds in One

Like the characters' worries about university in the first story in Krik? Krak! despite the atrocities taking place around them, the stories in the second half show a similar theme: a melding of the "two worlds" (namely Haiti and America), like a strict Haitian mother who survived civil war and poverty buying her daughter lingerie or another immigrant mother secretly babysitting the children of New York's elite with her sisters-in-arms, like a "Third World Parent-Teacher Association."
