Like the characters' worries about university in the first story in
Krik? Krak! despite the atrocities taking place around them, the stories in the second half show a similar theme: a melding of the "two worlds" (namely Haiti and America), like a strict Haitian mother who survived civil war and poverty buying her daughter lingerie or another immigrant mother secretly babysitting the children of New York's elite with her sisters-in-arms, like a "Third World Parent-Teacher Association."
